The optimized protocol enhances detection of patient DTCs compared to alternately stained and processed slides. Selected images representing candidate disseminated tumor cells (CK + WBC-) and CK + WBC+ cells from Patient 1 in Table 1 stained with the RareCyte or optimized protocol. Image exposure time and brightness and contrast settings had to be altered between the slides stained with the optimized and the RareCyte protocol due to a decrease in overall signal with the RareCyte protocol.
